General Tips
Performance
- Polling Interval. You can set the polling interval when
DiskState should retrieve your disk space information. This should
typically be every 10 seconds. If you have a lot of network mapped
drives, it is not recommended to use a shorter interval as the
system might get somewhat slow.
- Task Priority. Investigating the system for duplicate
files is no simple task. DiskState can easily eat through several
GBs of files. If DiskState is running on an important server
with a lot of users, adjust the DiskState Work Priority to Idle.
Doing this makes DiskState only use free CPU cycles for its work
- leaving the server workload alone for its users.
Volumes
- Storage Volume Setup. Polling floppy drives A or B is not
generally a nice idea. On a normal floppy drive, there will be
small clicking sound if there is no floppy in the drive when
DiskState checks this volume. Tip: If you are using a
LS-120 drive or a CF-Card Reader, this shouldn't be much of a problem.
- Color Threshold. You can specify the
percentage thresholds for disk usage bars in the DiskState main window.
By default, the usage bars go yellow if the usage is above 60%, and they
red over 90% usage. This is to help spot exhausted disk volumes
easier. Drag the sliders for custom threshold values.
- Window Shade. To select what volumes to appear in the DiskState main titlebar in window shade mode, click the Window Shade button and
select three volumes next to appear in the titlebar.
- Tray Icon. Do you want to have a pie icon in the system tray? This pie chart shows the space usage of a given volume. To enable this feature, click on the Tray Icon button, answer Yes, and then select a volume to be represented by a pie chart icon by clicking on a given volume A-Z next. Note: Enabling this will replace the original DiskState icon. To disable this feature again, click on the Tray Icon button again and click Yes. Note that the system tray icon will display the volume drive letter after restarting DiskState.
- Include Similar Serial Numbers (same as "Include virtual/subst'ed volumes under Options). Makes DiskState include volumes that have equal serial numbers. Enable this option if your favorite drive is not showing up in the main window. You can read more about this about this by searching for Volume Computing on the web.
Notify
- You can set up notifications when volumes reach their specified maximum capacity.
Window
- System Tray.
Like to have DiskState running at all times but do not want taskbar
real-estate consumed by DiskState? There are two options for you if you like
to do exactly that:
Click on the "System tray minimized" radio
button under "Show window in" to make DiskState remove its
taskbar icon and add a system tray icon when the application is
minimized. The other option is to click on the "System tray only".
This removes the taskbar icon whether DiskState is minimized or not.
DiskState will in both these cases be accessible by a neat little
icon in the system tray. You can also select DiskState to appear
both places. That is, both be visible at all times in the system tray
and the taskbar.
- Always On Top. You can make the
main DiskState window always appear on top of other windows.
- Multiple language support. Go to
DiskState Resources on the
web to see if there is a suitable language pack for you to download.
Once downloaded, place the LNG file in the DiskState folder. Go to
DiskState's settings and click on "( English )" from the Windows
property sheet. Select the desired language pack and restart
DiskState.
- Automatically run DiskState at startup. To start DiskState when you log on to your workstation,
enable "Automatically run...".
However, it might be annoying to have the DiskState window pop
up when you log on. Enable "Start program in iconized/minimized mode"
to solve this problem.
- Custom/alternative fonts. If you are experiencing problems with DiskState showing you weird international font characters, be sure to enable "Don't look for alternative fonts".
If you think that the font for typing regular expressions is way too tiny,
click "Custom font for regexps" and select another font for this purpose.
We recommend a "Courier New" non-proportional font.
- Minimize main by [x] instead of closing it.
If you run DiskState all the time, you may want the usual [x] button in the
titlebar to act as a "minimize button" instead of shutting down DiskState
itself. Enable this checkbox for that.
